@amerpie I only ever encounter that with people from northern Europe. I remember a business associate saying how much he loved a restaurant with an odd name. "'One if it's on the ocean, two if it's on the land,' something like that," he said. "`One if by land, two if by sea?'" I said. "Yes, that's it!" he said.
It was only at that moment that I realized he was an immigrant — his English was perfectly unaccented and American but anybody born in the US would know that phrase.
